Smartphone apps are all the rage these days. Now, popular riding spots in Grand Junction offer their own for local and visiting mountain bikers.

Trevor and Sienna Martin, avid mountain bikers and Grand Junction locals, toyed with ideas surrounding tours and guiding for years. Then in 2012, they decided to produce a digital guide app for iPhone and Android users. Called Guide Pro, the app uses phone GPS to locate riders and inform them of what’s ahead.

“We are hoping to turn it into a mainstay platform for guided trips not just in Grand Junction, but all over,” Trevor said. “It’s the insider’s scoop for best trails in the area.”

So far the app is only available as a beta version on iPhones. It costs $5. It offers turn-by-turn directions, ride suggestions and trail difficulty ratings. It also alerts riders to landmarks and important intersections.

“We are committed to making Guide Pro the best mobile mountain bike software available,” Sienna said. “We see Guide Pro becoming as essential to your ride as a spare tire or your helmet.”

To fund continued app development, the Martins launched a Kickstarter campaign on March 6; it will run until March 27 with a goal of $6,000.

According to Trevor, the money will be used to put final touches on the app after self-funding it for the past two years. As of March 17, it was at $2,400; and on March 19, the campaign had raised more than $4,200. The goal is to have a final version of the app by May.

Grand Valley trails will be showcased by the app first. Once local trails are covered, the Martins aim to map other mountain-biking hot spots like Sedona, Moab, Durango, Cortez and Salida.

“We have a lot of local support and extremely high hopes of a successful launch,” Trevor said of Guide Pro, adding: “It’s giving the riders knowledge and taking the guess work out of the rides.”
