Grapplers advance to quarterfinals

DENVER – In the first day of the state tournament, Eagle Valley wrestlers went 4-0 at the Pepsi Center Thursday.”Everybody got through the first round. It was good a good one to get out of the way,” said Eagle Valley coach Ron Beard.

Mason Ewing (135 weight) beat Jeff Phillips of Thompson Valley, 8-5; Chris Harvey (160) earned a technical fall against Rudy Chavez of Fort Morgan; Kylan Kottenstette (151) defeated Justin Myers of Elizabeth, 5-1 and Brendan Best handled Ben Howard of Widefield, 13-4.Today, the wrestlers will continue in the quarterfinals, which start at 1 p.m.”It’s going to be tough,” Beard said. “We face some pretty difficult kids.”

The semifinals will be held today at 7:15 p.m., followed by finals on Saturday.
