Harvey, Best still in play
DENVER ” It’s not over just yet.
Eagle Valley has two wrestlers who will be taking to the mat on the third day of the 4A state wrestling championships today at the Pepsi Center in Denver.
The Devils started Friday with all three of its state qualifiers in the quarterfinals.
Freshman James Harvey won his match at the 130 weight, pinning Logan Bunch of Cheyenne Mountain in 2:45. Eagle Valley junior Chad Strakbein lost to Broomfield’s Jerry Huff at 103 by a score of 16-4.
Then, in the highly-competitive 189 bracket, Eagle Valley senior Brendan Best fell to No. 1-ranked Sunny Yohn of Alamosa, 4-3.
In his semifinal match, Harvey lost to Samuel Soto of Fort Morgan, 5-3. Harvey is assured of placing in his first state appearance, and with a win early tomorrow, can place as high as third.
Strakbein finished off his first state appearance later Friday when he was pinned by James Martinez of Rifle.
Best, needing a win to stay alive, beat Brian Key of Rifle, 12-2, and faces J.J. Valverde of Ridge View today.
