Huskies booters fall at Rifle

Depleted by injuries and worn out from a rough game – a tie against Steamboat Springs Thursday – the Huskies fell to Rifle 3-1 Saturday.

The Huskies finished 4-4-2 in the 4A Slope and 7-6-2 overall. In each of its four seasons, the Class of 2003 earned postseason berths, had winning seasons and beat rival Vail Mountain School.

But against Rifle, the Huskies fell behind 3-0, before Julio Garcia fed Juan Barragon for the team’s only goal.

Your seniors are Chris Jones, Ryan Phillips, Scott Canepa, Alex Penwill,

Sean Reynolds, Ian Mitchell, Lee Sandoval, Keith Small, J.D. Lemon, Roberto Alcaras, Kyle Madison, Kyle Netzeband, Raul Chavarria and Beau Beckley.

There is one interesting note regarding Netzeband. The senior co-captain was injured in the first half and missed the rest of the game. Battle Mountain went on to give up three goals for the first time in league play this season.

“Kyle doesn’t get a lot of the headlines,” Huskies coach David Cope said. “If you go all year without giving up three goals, that’s saying something. There’s some serious firepower in our league.”

The Huskies enter the postseason as the No. 3 seed out of the Western Slope and will play No. 3 from the Southwestern League. Seedings will be out next week.
