Huskies crush Classical Academy
COLORADO SPRINGS – That better, Coach?
Battle Mountain’s David Joyce was not pleased with his team’s offensive start last week against Roaring Fork. Presumably, the football coach is in a better mood after Friday night’s game at The Classical Academy.
The Huskies scored touchdowns on their first six possessions, building a 40-7 lead on their way to a 53-28 win at TCA.
With the win, Battle Mountain moved to 3-0 for the first time since 1997. That year, the Huskies open with wins against Eagle Valley (then a nonconference game), Soroco and Plateau Valley.
The Huskies also avenged a 42-7 loss last year to TCA in Edwards.
After Titans quarterback Logan Floyd hit wide-receiver Justin Miller for a long touchdown pass on the first play of the game, the Huskies went to work with their ground game. Zach Guida started the parade to the end zone with a 30-yard run.
Meanwhile, Battle Mountain’s defense was settling in, forcing a three-and-out. With the ball back, the Huskies’ Paton Lovett did most of the work with a 38-yard scamper, followed by a 25-yard dash for a touchdown.
The Huskies’ defense forced turnovers on TCA’s next two possessions. Blaize Olle was the beneficiary with scoring runs of 7 and 3 yards, and Battle Mountain led, 27-7, after the first quarter,
Battle Mountain’s Jordan Harrison ended the Titans’ next possession by blocking a field-goal attempt. Reeve Sanders needed just one play after that to rumble 68 yards to the house. Fear not, quarterback Jake Engle wasn’t left out. With 8:45 left in the half, he hooked up with Sanders for 62-yard strike.
The Huskies kept going in the second half. They ate five minutes off the clock with their first drive. Engle found Jimmy O’Rourke 38 yards in the process, and Olle scored his third touchdown of the night.
Chris Libertini wrapped things up with a fourth-quarter score.
Friday night was the major test of the season for the Huskies, and they passed it with flying colors. But it is only the first of three-game road trip for the team. Battle Mountain has its league opener next week at longtime-nemesis Rifle.
