Huskies dance team off to nationals
The Battle Mountain dance team heads to Disney World today to compete at the National Dance Team Competition (NDTC) in Orlando, Fla., this weekend.
The NDTC has teams from all over the country competing in various divisions. The Huskies compete in the Small Varsity Pom Division ” pom teams of 14 dancers or less. There is no consideration for the school size in the competition divisions. Battle Mountain will be competing in the same division as Cherry Creek, which boasts a population of 3,600 students.
There are 71 other teams in the Small Varsity Pom Division at Nationals. Teams includes some familiar Denver-area schools such as Ponderosa, Mountain Vista, Cherry Creek and Chaparral.
“We work so hard during our eight-month season, from July through March,” co-captain Annie Marcum said. “We have a great community that supports us in our dancing and fundraising to get us to nationals. We are so lucky to have earned a spot and nationals is the payoff we get as dancers. It is very satisfying to know we’ll be competing with the best teams in the nation.”
“Every competition you attend is different and you have something to learn from,” coach Kathy Thompson said. ” We are just as excited to watch and learn from other teams, as we are to compete.”
Battle Mountain will begin competition in the preliminaries on Saturday morning. The Huskies hope is to move into the semifinals which take place that afternoon. The finals are Sunday evening.
