RIFLE – This county has really good pole vaulters. Anyone notice that?

Eagle Valley, Vail Christian and Battle Mountain swept the podium in both pole vault events, as the Devils, Saints and Huskies shined at Saturday’s Rifle Invitational.

Eagle Valley’s Aaron Kline pulled the upset Saturday, edging Battle Mountain’s Zach Guida. The Devils’ Wyatt Smith completed the sweep.

For the ladies, the Huskies’ Bailey Garton (first) and Molly Childers (third) made a Battle Mo¶untain sandwich of Vail Christian’s Kylie Alexander.

For the Saints, Alexander had an eventful day. She set a school record and lost another. Alexander went 10 feet, 1 inch in pole vault, besting her own record yet another time. That’s her first jump in double-digits. She also held the 100-meter hurdles mark, but teammate Celia Smith took it from her Saturday.

The Battle Mountain girls won the whole shooting match, topping Hotchkiss, 152-90. The Saints girls, who are very small in numbers, still finished 11th out of 17 teams. On the boys’ side, Eagle Valley won 4A bragging rights in the county, topping Battle Mountain, 85.5-63. Rifle won the boys’ side with the Devils fourth and the Huskies fifth.

For Battle Mountain, the big news of the day was Sophia Calabrese winning the 300 hurdles and taking second in the 100 hurdles. The Huskies also had a mix of veterans competing for the second time in as many days – they were at Loveland Friday – and some younger faces in new places.

“We are in a very difficult phase of our training, but, at the same time, the training is showing itself on the track,” Huskies coach Jeff Krumlauf said. “We really believe in the peak(ing) system like everyone else. This was a good weekend, especially in terms of competing over multiple days, which will happen at meets later in the season.”

It should be noted that the Huskies did not set a school record Saturday after setting five in earlier competition this week. (For shame.)

Eagle Valley’s Zeke Sandoval and Kline had big days, which caught coach Jeff Shroll’s attention.

“Zeke just continues to get faster and faster,” he said. “And for Aaron, that’s a big confidence boost, winning the pole vault. I also think his hurdles times will be dropping.”

And for Vail Christian, Ashlyn Gruber remains fast. She was second in the 400 in third in the 800 against a field of mostly bigger schools.

Battle Mountain’s at Fort Collins Friday, while Eagle Valley’s up in Craig the same day. All three schools will be sending contingents Saturday to the Joe Shields Invitational at West Grand.
