Huskies fall at Cortez
CORTEZ, Colorado – Montezuma-Cortez got its first win of the season, but it didn’t come easily. The Panthers held off Battle Mountain in the closing minutes, 44-35.
Down 38-35 with 1:57 to go in the game, Huskies quarterback Jake Engle tried to mount a rally, only to be intercepted. The Panthers returned the pick for a touchdown.
That was the only blemish for Engle during what coach David Joyce called “lights out” performance for the junior.
Cortez led 35-31 with five minutes to go in the fourth quarter. The Huskies made a dramatic goal-line stand, stuffing the Panthers at the 2. Battle Mountain went 98 yards in the other direction to take a 35-31 lead before the Panthers mounted what would be the game-winning drive.
Battle Mountain certainly did not lack for offense. Parke Robbins ran for 299 yards and scored four touchdowns. John Simpson also found the end zone. Engle hooked up with Robbins, Cody Hervert and Simspon on numerous occasion for gains through the air.
Battle Mountain (1-5 overall and 0-4 in the 3A Slope) is home Friday for Steamboat Springs.
