Huskies girls 3,200 relay goes low at Loveland meet

LOVELAND — First, this meet needs a better name.

The R2-J Invitational just doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue, like say, the Cheyenne Mountain Stampede during the fall cross-country season. Name not withstanding, Battle Mountain track and field went down to Loveland for the R2-J, and was A-OK.

The talker from this one was that the Huskies’ 3,200-meter relay team of Alex Raichart, Liz Constien, Lizzy Harding and Naomi Harding won and put up the best time recorded so far this season in either Class 4A or 5A.

And if anyone remembers, the last time the Huskies won a state title in track and field, it was in the boys’ 4-by-8 in 2008. The 3,200 remains the glamour relay for the long-distance happy Huskies.

Battle Mountain’s ladies finished fifth in a Front Range-heavy field. The mile relay also took the top spot, and the Huskies picked up oodles of points in the open 1,600 and 3,200.

For the boys, Emmanuel Escobar won the pole vault. And perhaps, in the most important event of the day, the Huskies gents won the throwers’ relay with a banana as a baton. Their reward was a giant cookie.

Battle Mountain’s next stop is the Dakota Ridge Invitational.
