VMS Nordic brings the hammer at Maloit Park
MINTURN — Vail Mountain School Nordic put on a show on Saturday at Maloit Park during a combined freestyle/classic pursuit race,
The ladies won easily with 175 points well ahead of the Colorado Rocky Mountain School with 161. More importantly, they were 19 points ahead of Summit County, their closest pursuers for the overall this weekend (combined points between alpine and Nordic racers).
Maddie Donovan was first; Emma Blakslee third and Bridget Donovan fourth for the Gore Rangers.
VMS also won the boys race with Cameron Wolfe winning, Peter Littman in fourth and Ian Hardenbergh in 12th. The Gore Rangers piled up 166 points to Summit’s 161, and that was without Eric Zdechlik, one of their aces. He did the classic portion of the race as workout and skipped the freestyle side. There are more points there for the Gore Rangers come state in two weeks in Steamboat Springs.
Battle Mountain’s giboys finished third with Franklin Reilly taking bronze.
The Battle Mountain girls grabbed the headlines in this week’s round of giant slalom.
Haley Frischholz led the Huskies ladies to a win on Thursday at Keystone. She won both runs and Battle Mountain topped Summit, 172-167.
Elizabeth Criss took third and Kiana Brausch was seventh.
The Huskies boys were third with 161 points behind Platte Canyon and Summit, who tied with 162 points. In that photo finish, Battle Mountain’s Kedrick Kinsella was third, Dutch Schroeder eighth and Christian Bower 11th.
Meanwhile, at Ski Cooper, both Vail Mountain School teams took second. Evergreen’s boys nipped VMS, 171-167. Peer Carnes did take the top spot with Michael Resnick in third and Shane Cole 15th.
Aspen won on the girls’ side handily, 174-156. Whitney Merriman (seventh), Catherine Descisciolo (ninth) and Alyssa Hilb (18th) were the Gore Rangers’ scorers.
The alpine regular season concludes with a slalom at Beaver Creek on Friday, whith Nordic at Frisco on Saturday.
