Huskies girls lax wins at Fruita

FRUITA — Battle Mountain girls lacrosse kept its drive alive for a playoff spot on Tuesday with a 16-15 win at Fruita Monument.

The Huskies are 11-1 after Tuesday’s win, which they led all the way.

Katie Kessenich, Maggie Berger, Marti Schmidt, Natalie Berger, Haley Frischholz and Lindsay Sierant were all in on the scoring. Meanwhile, goalie Siena Miller got a serious workout with 23 saves, most of them coming in the second half.

The bigger question for Battle Mountain is whether it can make the postseason. Unlike boys lacrosse, which has two classifications, Colorado has only one for the ladies, and the Mountain Conference is the Rodney Dangerfield of the sport.

Traditionally, only the conference champion makes the tournament, and Aspen has that spot locked up. Battle Mountain lost to the Skiers in the conference game, but did bounce back to beat them later in the season in a nonleague game.

Since the Mountain Conference champion doesn’t get much love in the seeding process — Fruita won the league last year and was seeded 19th out of 20 teams — it’s hard to see the circuit getting two teams into the dance.

That said, the Huskies have a golden opportunity to force the issue today when they host Ralston Valley at 4 p.m. The Mustangs are 10-1, ranked No. 9 in the latest CHSAA poll, and, most importantly, have made the playoffs the past two springs.

“They’re a top-10 team and we have to execute a clean game to compete with to think about the postseason,” Huskies coach Emily Jaissle said. “Aspen’s won the league title, and, for sure, it’s going to be tough to sneak another Mountain team into the playoffs, but Ralston Valley is an opportunity for us.”

BMHS boys fall at Conifer

CONIFER — Battle Mountain boys lacrosse dropped an 18-6 decision at Conifer on Wednesday.

The better news is that the Mountain Conference title game is finally set. It will be Aspen at Battle Mountain on Saturday at 3 p.m.
