Huskies harriers finish strong at regionals
Rob Finlay and Sabrina Ste. Marie just missed qualifying for state in Saturday 4A Western Slope Regional Meet in Palisade Saturday morning.
Senior Rob Finlay finished 16th with a time of 18 minutes even. Sabrina Ste. Marie, as a sophomore, took 18th, clocking a 21:41. Individual in the top 15 got a ticket to Kent Denver for the state meet.
“I feel bad for Rob,” Huskies coach Rob Parish said. “My heart goes out to him. This is his fourth year doing this and he did everything he could. But I think he can feel great and proud of his effort. He put every ounce of energy into it.”
In past years, the duo likely would have made it. Last year, the top three teams as well as 15 more individuals qualified. This year the rule was changed to the top three teams and individuals justin the top 15.
“Once again, she was so close,” Parish said. “She put herself in the best possible situation where she could have a chance.”
Teammate Danielle Wray, put up a personal-best with a 23:27. Meanwhile, Eagle Valley freshman Ben Rogers joined Wray in that category with a 20:57, a time which qualified him for a letter.
On the girls’ side, other times included Maddie McCaulley (23:51), Kim White (24:19), Eryka Ehling (24:55), Emily Wray (25:46) and Melissa Hines (28:17). On the boys’ team, Alex Edwards (19:39), Andy Given (20:02), Dan Lewis (20:06), Juan Carlos Fernandez (23:54) and Riley Pack (24:09) posted strong times.
“I was so impressed with the way the kids worked and improved over the season,” Parish said. “They put their heart and soul into it.”
Parish coached the team with Kelli Witter-Bresler.
