EAGLE — Battle Mountain hockey outshot the Mullen Mustangs 19-2 in the first period on its way to a 3-1 Foothills League win at Eagle Ice Rink on Friday.

Riley Bishop got the scoring going for the Huskies with a shot that slid right under the goalie’s pads five minutes into the game. Bronson Fiore and Robby Gruber helped with the assists.

Less than a minute later, Tanner Caldarola put one in the net with assists by Jesse Relefors and Zach Booth, giving Battle Mountain a 2-0 lead six minutes into the game.

“We scored early. Getting the first goal helps,” said coach Dennis Hextall. “Anytime we score in the first period, it gets everybody going.”

Despite maintaining control of the puck for most of the game, and outshooting the Mustangs 44-14, the Huskies missed some opportunities.

Solid passing by Huskies set up shots on goal, but the Mustangs goalie proved difficult to score on.

“We played well, but we could have played a little stronger,” said Keaton Fedrizzi. “We’re happy with the win.”

The Huskies defense played aggressive and came up big against a few Mullen power plays.

Wyatt Alt scored the third goal for the Huskies in the second period. He found himself alone with the puck way out near the blue line and rocketed a shot into the net for the 3-0 lead.

The Mustangs scored their goal in the second, and the Huskies defense shut them down in the third and final period. Goalie Max Clark frustrated the Mustangs offense all night.

With the win, the Huskies (5-4, 3-3) remain in the hunt for a playoff berth. Up next is Dakota Ridge today. The Eagles (8-3, 4-3) are just ahead of the Huskies in the playoff standings.

“I’m looking forward to making some good plays, hitting people and scoring,” Hunter Fox said.
