EAGLE-VAIL, Colorado ” Battle Mountain and Eagle Valley volleyball always seems to be competing, even when they’re not on the same court.

Thursday night, the Huskies and Devils ,seemed to be racing each other in a contest of who could dispatch their opponent the quickest.

While it probably went down to a photo finish ” Eagle Valley pounded Rifle in three ” the Huskies did their part, sweeping Glenwood Springs, 25-12, 25-15, 25-11.

“We’ve just got to pick up our game,” Glenwood coach Sean Lively said. “It’s not that we’re incapable of doing it. But they’re a great team. They have great passing. Our passing wasn’t the best today. It’s just going to take more time. They deserved it.”

“We just stayed at a nice, steady level,” Huskies coach Brian Doyon said with satisfaction.

The stat of the evening was that Battle Mountain had 20 blocks.

“I think we’re doing well on working on our own skills and coming together in our own game,” Huskies sophomore Krista Norris said.

Norris was one of three Huskies with a team-high seven kills (Anna Padget-Shields and Hannah Ellison). Padget-Shields and Ellison also had six blocks.

“Experience is everything, and (Battle Mountain) has it,” Lively said. “We’re working to build a team out of a lot of girls who don’t have varsity experience. We’re getting there and see what happens.”

Glenwood is home for Eagle Valley Saturday, while Battle Mountain is at Rifle. Both games mark the halfway point in league for the Devils and Huskies, and while nobody says anything about it, Oct. 7 in Gypsum is looming.

“We have to face everyone a second time around,” Doyon said. “We have to elevate our play continuously through the season so that either the second time we’re seeing teams or in the postseason, they’re playing strong.”
