Huskies overwhelm Rifle in 3-game sweep

RIFLE, Colorado ” It didn’t take long for Battle Mountain to get on a roll in their match against Rifle on Saturday afternoon. The Huskies jumped ahead of the Bears 9-2 in the first game and carried the momentum the rest of the match as they finished the three-game sweep (25-13, 25-16, 25-18).
Led by Anna Padget-Shields up front with her 10 kills to go with two aces, the Huskies overwhelmed Rifle along the net. Over the course of the match Battle Mountain totaled 27 kills and six blocks with countless others frustrating the Rifle players.
Also contributing for the Huskies were Krista Norris who had seven kills and a block and Hannah Ellison had four kills, four aces and three blocks.
After jumping out to the early 9-2 lead, Rifle awoke to cut the Huskies’ lead to four at 13-9 but unforced errors plagued the Bears yet again enabling Battle Mountain to pull away 22-12 before cementing the 25-13 win.
The second game presented the Bears with their best opportunity to steal one when they came out strong to edge out to a 7-6 lead. Rifle was unable to hold down the Huskies and instead faltered, falling behind 20-14 before losing 25-16.
Once Battle Mountain ran off nine unanswered points as game three got underway, the match was over. Rifle attempted a valiant comeback, getting to within two points at 19-17 but the effort was fruitless in the end. The Huskies woke up and closed out the Bears for the sweep.
Brianna Bascom’s six kills led Rifle while Laura Elkins helped keep the Bears close multiple times during the match with her great serving which netted five aces. Morgan Patrick also played strong up front, adding five kills and two blocks to Rifle’s total.
