PAGOSA SPRINGS – Battle Mountain boys basketball finished a successful opening weekend with a second-place finish at the Pagosa Springs Tournament Saturday. After edging Aztec, N.M., Friday night, the Huskies fell to 3A No. 1-ranked Pagosa, 72-58, and beat Gunnison, 69-57 for a 2-1 mark on the weekend.”Some of the things we can take out of the weekend is that we had pretty good intensity in the Pagosa game,” Huskies coach Philip Tronsrue said. “I thought Trent Beckley played their big man well, so we know that we can put some pressure on the inside. We hit 17-3-pointers (this weekend), so we established a perimeter game which gives us a balanced attack. I think we’re capable of playing with anyone. Pagosa Springs is a good team and we hung with them for three quarters. I’m confident that we can play with a team of that caliber.”Against Pagosa, Connor Drumm led Battle Mountain with 19 points, while Kyle Leffler had nine and Rogelio Loya eight. In the win versus the Cowboys, the Huskies had a diversified attack. Drumm rang up 16 and Loya had 13. Leffler poured in 11, while Derek Rush, Friday’s hero, had 10.The Battle Mountain boys are at Aspen Tuesday at 7 p.m. The girls team, which was idle this weekend, plays at 5:30, also at Aspen.Sports Editor Chris Freud can be reached at 949-0555, ext. 614 or Colorado
