PALISADE “-Three points and peaches, not a bad day.

The heat was on Battle Mountain soccer to get to a nearby peach stand after its game at Palisade. The peach stand was going to be open for only 24 more minutes after the game ended.

“The school bus pulled up right next to the stand,” Huskies coach David Cope said. “The kids poured out and we got our peaches.”

That’s good news for Cope’s standing in his house. We’re pretty sure his wife, Kathleen, wanted some fruit out of the trip. In a less dramatic development, the Huskies pounded Palisade, 10-0, to gain three points on the pack of Eagle Valley, Steamboat Springs and Glenwood Springs.

Davey DeChant and Jair Molina each had hat tricks for the Huskies (6-2 overall and 4-1 in the Slope. David Gonzalez got his first goal of the year, and Cody Hervert notched his first varsity goal. Jack Sunderland and Efren Gonzalez also scored.

After a nonconference loss at Cheyenne Mountain and the obligatory bludgeoning of Palisade for the second time this season, Battle Mountain returns home for a Saturday game against Rifle at 11 a.m.

“We had a quick team meeting,” Cope said. “We said, ‘Break’s over. It’s time to get back to business.'”
