Huskies smack Titans

SILT — Seriously, when was the last time this happened?

Battle Mountain catcher Wyatt Harwood had two triples in one inning as the Huskies blanked Coal Ridge, 16-0, on Saturday.

According to baseballalmanac.com, the last time anyone in the majors tripled twice in an inning was the Rockies’ Cory Sullivan in a 10-4 win over the Padres in San Diego on April 9, 2006. (We’ll just assume that everybody involved with Battle Mountain baseball knew that trivia.)

Sullivan, playing center field that day, got his pair of three-baggers off Jake Peavy and Chan Ho Park in the fifth inning, which is kind of ironic. That’s because the Huskies went off for 15 runs in the fifth inning, while the Rockies only scored seven when Sullivan tripled twice.

In fairness to Harwood, he hasn’t been in the squat, say, as long as a Carlton Fisk. In fact, Harwood is a running back on the football team, so we imagine he’s pretty fast, particularly when others are not trying to tackle him.

All this made for a nice opening win for the Huskies.

Other stars of the game included Sean Weller. The pitcher, who is a Giants fan, did a very nice right-handed imitation of Madison Bumgarner, white-washing the Titans over five innings, striking out 10 Coal Ridge batters and allowing only three hits.

Battle Mountain’s Rey Trillo gave his team the lead with an RBI single in the second inning. And then, everyone in Vegas gold piled on in the fifth. In addition to Harwood, Andrew Herrera, Robert Redinger, Nick Williams and Trillo again all had big run-scoring hits, as the Huskies closed the game down in five innings due to the 10-run rule.

The Huskies continue nonconference play when they face Basalt today at 3 p.m. at the Eagle County Fairgrounds.
