Huskies top Montrose in five
MONTROSE, Colorado ” Battle Mountain volleyball started 2008 right where it left off in 2007.
In a meeting of two 4A state qualifiers from last season, the Huskies rallied to knock off Montrose, 15-25, 28-30, 25-17, 29-27, 15-10, on the road in their season opener.
“The biggest thing is it’s a boost for our confidence, being down and being able to come back,” Huskies coach Brian Doyon said. “They continued to play hard toward the latter half of the match. They were playing smarter volleyball and it helped them push through the hump.”
It’s always good to open with a win, but this was definitely a quality victory. Montrose upset Battle Mountain in Pueblo last year during regionals, and both teams ended up on the floor of the Denver Coliseum last November.
Stephanie Miletich led Battle Mountain with eight kills, while Anna Padget-Shields had seven and Krista Norris and Hannah Ellison notched six each.
Erin Barker ran the attack with 31 assists. Kelsey Plath was the team’s top server with 14 points from behind the line, including two aces. Plath also had 14 digs, while her back-row partner Cara Murbach snatched 11.
“I think we just settled down a little bit,” Doyon said. “Montrose had a couple of tall girls at middle block, and we weren’t closing down on defense. Game 2 was tough, but we made a few adjustments and started to make fewer errors.”
Battle Mountain (1-0) has its home opener Tuesday at 6 p.m. against 5A Rampart.
