Huskies track shines at Mullen

MULLEN — Battle Mountain track and field sent some of its athletes to the Mullen Runners Roost Invitational for a mid-season test on Saturday and came away with some good results.

Kate Pittel placed in four events — both sets of hurdles, the pole vault and as a part of the 1,600-meter relay. Jake Borel also had a big day with fifth in the 1,600 with a time of 4 minutes, 33 seconds and 11th in the 800 (2:04).

“We’re in a good spot,” Huskies coach Rob Parish said. “We went through a transition this week. We’re not in the beginning of the season any more. We’re not in the championships season. It’s mid-season. We’re starting to figure out where all the pieces fit. The league meet’s only four weeks away.”

Rychelle Denardo was seventh in the 800 and sixth in the 1,600. Elizabeth Constien was right behind her in the mile in eighth. Alex Raichart took sixth in the 400 with a time of 1:03.8. Hannah Gaylord and Kaela Fahrney took seventh and 11th, respectively in the 3,200.

Both the girls 1,600 and 3,200 relay teams were in the points at Mullen.

For the boys, Jack Skidmore went 44 feet in the shot. Demetrius Parrish finished sixth in the 110 hurdles, while Doug McMurrain was third in the 300 hurdles.

Alexis Aguirre clocked a 4:38 in the mile, good for 11th, and the Huskies’ 800 relay took third in its heat.

Battle Mountain is back in Edwards on Tuesday for its home meet and is at Loveland on Thursday.

Baseball teams lose

It was a bummer of a weekend for both Battle Mountain and Eagle Valley baseball.

The Huskies dropped a pair to Glenwood Springs at home, 5-0 and 14-9. In the nightcap, the visiting Demons scored seven times in the top of the seventh to erase a Battle Mountain lead.

Meanwhile, the Devils fell at Palisade, 12-6 and 15-2.
