Huskies win league opener
PALISADE, Colorado “-Fans may not recognize Battle Mountain volleyball by the time the Huskies return home to take on Eagle Valley on Tuesday.
Nearly 10 days ago, the Huskies played their only home game and looked quite out of sorts in a loss to Rampart. Two wins later, including a 25-19, 25-14, 22-25, 25-20 victory in the team’s league opener at Palisade Thursday, things are definitely looking up for Battle Mountain (3-1).
For the Huskies Thursday, it was all about second chances.
“Our hitters are definitely starting to play better,” Huskies coach Brian Doyon said. “The key to any game is getting second-ball opportunities for our hitters. If you don’t put it down the first time, you play good defense and you get a second swing.”
And keeping with the defense-first mantra of Doyon, the Huskies were stout against the Bulldogs in back. Kelsey Plath (22 digs) Anna Padget-Shields (15), Sam Miletich and Cara Murbach (nine each) started things right.
Erin Barker dished 39 assists and the big boppers did their thing. Hannah Ellison pounded down 13 kills, while Padget-Shields and Miletich had 10 each. The Huskies also combined for 13 blocks at the net which might also make Doyon come close to a smile, which is a good thing.
Murbach also shined in serving, notching six of the team’s 12 aces against Palisade.
“She’s doing pretty well there,” Doyon said. “We’ve been concentrating on serving softly the last couple of games. Some of the girls are starting to hit it stronger, and Cara is one who’s picking it up quickly.”
Battle Mountain hits the road again Saturday at Delta.
