ASPEN — It’s kind of funny when you win a meet without really trying.

That was the case for Battle Mountain girls cross-country on Saturday at the Chris Severy Invitational in Aspen.

Yes, the Huskies rolled, easily outpacing Telluride, 31-76, but that wasn’t the point of the exercise.

The point of the exercise was, in fact, exercise.

“I feel like our top girls who have been running most of the season are pretty much ready (for the postseason) and in a good spot,” Huskies coach Rob Parish said. “We chose to take these girls to stay in touch with hill running for the state meet.”

And while the Huskies split their ladies’ squad with some running on Friday at the Pat Amato Invite in Northglenn, Saturday’s meet was “a hard workout” as far as Parish was concerned.

The Huskies’ seven were under orders to run as a pack for the first 2 miles, before going their own way for the final 1.1. Even after being allowed to go off on their own, the Huskies seemed bunched together, going 4-5-6-7-9.

The Huskies’ final meet of the regular season is Thursday at Rifle. Parish is being his usual coy self with regard to his plan for Rifle and regionals. Some will run at Rifle. Some won’t. (This is the sort of really helpful stuff the coach discloses at this time of the year.)

What we do know is that a team can run nine at regionals in Grand Junction, and the competition should be fierce for those final spots.
