Huskies XC off to Arizona
Battle Mountain cross-country is out like polyester today.
The Huskies, under the auspices of a club team in compliance with CHSAA rules, are blowing town for Casa Grande, Arizona, south of Phoenix, for the Nike Cross Nationals Southwest Regional Southwest.
This is not the first time Battle Mountain has been to this meet with teams from the Four Corners states and Nevada, but it is the first time that both the boys and the girls are competing in the black, or highest, division of the competition.
Training for this meet has been quite fun — not.
“It’s been 10 degrees in the morning. Half of the girls team took diggers,” Battle Mountain coach Rob Parish said with a laugh.
Battle Mountain will be lower in altitude, and in a considerably warmer environment — Saturday’s high is 72, scorching for anyone from the High Country.
In the meantime, the Huskies feature various award winners.
Alexis Aguirre is CHSAA all-state by finishing ninth as a sophomore at last month’s state meet. That accomplishment allowed the sophomore to talk some trash with assistant coach Jonny Stevens, who finished ninth at the state meet in 2005 as a sophomore.
Aguirre and Cameron Moore are honorable mention all-state, according to milesplit.com.
Battle Mountain and Eagle Valley have plenty of all-league winners as well. The Devils’ Gino Giovagnoli and the Huskies’ Aguirre and Moore made the first team for the boys. Eagle Valley’s Carly Volkmer is all-league for the ladies.
Honorable mentions abound with Battle Mountain’s Ethan Pence, Josh Braun, Ty Willoughby, Ricky Arreola, Hannah Gaylord, Rychelle Denardo and Kaela Fahrney.
