Kloser and Team Nike/Balance Bar qualify for Raid Championship
BEND, Oregon – Overcoming difficulties with navigation and equipment, Team Nike / Balance Bar, consisting of local adventure racing star Mike Kloser, Summit County athlete Monique Merrill, Michael Tobin and Ian Adamson, repeated last year’s results by taking second at the Raid qualifying event in Bend, Oregon. Last year, the team did the same and went on to win the Raid World Championship. This year’s grand finale is at Mont Blanc, France, Sept.10-15 and will feature a race course of more than 600 kilometers of trekking, inline skating, snowshoeing, canoeing and mountain biking.
Sunday’s event at Mt. Bachelor consisted of a course of 234 kilometers, including 3,400 meters of elevation.Adamson said that his team forgot to look at an addendum to the route information on the first day.
“We went up the wrong summit and back down again, and lost about 20 minutes there. We have been working at making it up ever since,” he said. Merrill commented that her 14 years of mountain biking have paid off.
“Overall, I’m really happy,” she said. “We made a few mistakes early on, but we came back super-strong. Today we nailed everything. It was a fabulous course. I’m really pleased with the last ride – super-technical and fast.”The best teams in the world from five different continents will compete on a tough course through the French and Swiss Alps in the world championship in September.Vail Colorado
