Lace them up: Women’s hockey league ready for play

Sharpen your skates. Tape your sticks. The Mountain Women’s Hockey League (MWHL) is beginning its sixth season.

This league, for players ages 18 and older (and sometimes for those more “experienced”), uses the ice rinks in Eagle and Vail for both practices and games from October- March. Players of all ability levels are welcome in the league.

Goalies are especially needed this season and play free in the league. Complete equipment rental packages for skaters are available through the Eagle Ice Rink.

“Last season over 90 women participated in the league’s fifth season,” said league veteran Suzanne Tarpey. “We anticipate an even greater number of women will be interested in joining our sixth season and plan on adding a sixth team to the league. The advantage of a local league like this is that there is very little traveling involved and besides, it’s a blast.”

Beginning in October, training camps are held to learn and/or review basic skating, stick handling and game positioning skills. The camps are divided by ability for novice, intermediate, and advanced players.

Draft day

At the end of the training camps, teams of approximately equal ability are formed that play each other during the season. The teams will be formed from a draft of all players by coaches and captains from each team.

League teams are sponsored by area businesses and include FirstBank Checkers, Gore Range Brewery Brewsers, Benderly Economic Eagles, Buckhorn Valley Wild, Sandbar Sports Grill Shooters, and a sixth team as yet to be named.

The MWHL also receives support from George Shaeffer Construction and Primary Colors Painting.

Coaching and instruction are an important part of the league, and volunteer coaches help to develop skills and team play through practice sessions and games throughout the season.

A tournament at the end of the season determines the overall league champion team. Awards are also given for individual achievements. This season, the Sandbar Sports Grill Shooters will be defending their tournament-championship trophy while the Benderly Economics Eagles will try to go back-to-back in the regular season.

Registration for the league must be completed by Nov. 10 to be included in the player draft. Women interested in joining this league should contact WECMRD at the Eagle Ice Rink (328-5277) or e-mail Sheryl@wecmrd.org.
