Lax camp coming to Eagle

EAGLE — The Vail Valley has long been home to the Vail Lacrosse Shootout, a tradition that helps make the local Independence Day celebration both unique and perennially popular. That tradition is also helping to fuel an increasingly popular youth lacrosse program, with interest and participation from one end of the valley to the other.

This summer, that program expands to include a new camp centered in Eagle and operated by former Division III All North Coast Athletic Conference player and NCAA coach Boomer Devlin.

Devlin’s new High Performance Lacrosse Camp debuted in June with much success, and the program continues in July and August with two additional one-week sessions.

BUILDING A FOUNDATION

High Performance Lacrosse Camp is a skills-based camp for rising second- to sixth-grade boys. The camp combines expert instruction in the fundamentals of lacrosse with competition, helping players of all ages and abilities build a strong and fundamentally sound foundation.

Devlin’s camp model sources local middle and high school players as coaches, giving the valley’s up-and-comers a chance to see the sport from a different angle and to pay it forward in their experience teaching younger players.

“Lacrosse has given so much to me,” Devlin said. “It has helped shape my personality and character. I am grateful to have the opportunity to give back to the game.”

Devlin played high school lacrosse at Horace Greeley High School in Chappaqua, New York, and collegiate lacrosse at Wittenberg University in the NCAC, one of the top conferences in Division III. Following graduation, Devlin coached professionally for 10 years at the high school and NCAA levels.

REMAINING SESSIONS

High Performance Lacrosse Camp continues this summer with sessions in July and August. The July session runs from Monday to July 24, while the August session takes place Aug. 11 through Aug. 14. Camps take place from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Eagle Fairgrounds Athletic Complex. Online registration is available via the WECMRD website at http://www.wecmrd.org.

‘FUTURE IS VERY BRIGHT’

Devlin plans to expand the camps for next summer.

“High Performance is off to an incredible start and the future is very bright, not only for the camp but for youth lacrosse in our valley,” he said. “The strength of all valley youth teams, middle school teams and high school teams will benefit from High Performance Lacrosse Camp.”
