Local skier wins gold at Junior Nationals
STEAMBOAT, Colorado – Ski & Snowboard Club Vail’s Broby Leeds is on a hot streak after coming off his win in the skier halfpipe at the Gatorade FreeFlow Tour finals last month. Competing against some of the best junior freeskiers in the country, Leeds added to his streak Wednesday when he claimed the title of Junior National halfpipe champion in Steamboat.”Leed’s halfpipe run was as technical as it could have been,” coach Luke Allen said. “He posted a solid run that locked him into first.”The run that earned Leeds the gold: an alley oop 540, a 720, a switch 720, a 900, a right 540 and a 1080.”It was really exciting making it through the qualifying rounds with 50 other skiers competing,” Leeds said. “This win really boosts my confidence.”Leeds led the charge for the SSCV men with his win. Following Leeds was Aaron Blunck, the Youth Olympic bronze medalist at the skier halfpipe in Innsbruck, Austria. Blunck took second in the halfpipe, with teammates Alex Ferreira and John Leonard in fourth and sixth, respectively. On Thursday, Leeds also took sixth in the Junior National slopestyle after two qualifying runs and two finals runs. SSCV teammates Cole Pates and Mitchell Lee placed ninth and 11th, respectively, in Thursday’s slopestyle.”I am so proud of the team as a whole,” coach Elana Chase said. “With so many of our athletes skiing their way into finals, it shows the depth of the talent of SSCV’s freeskiing team.”Leeds will be competing in the Freeskiing/Freestyle Nationals at Stratton, Vt., in late March.
