Local skiers run fast in Eldora

ELDORA, Colorado ” Coming off a stellar performance in its only home meet of the year, the Battle Mountain alpine team kept going fast on Friday in Eldora.

The Huskies tied for the team title with Evergreen with 165 points.

Battle Mountain wasn’t the only one to run strong in the giant slalom race. Vail Christian and Vail Mountain both turned in impressive times in both the boys and girls’ races.

The Huskies’ Charlie Barry and Davey DeChant paced area finishers in the boys’ race. Barry flew through the course in 53.31 seconds on his second run to take third overall with a combined time of 1:48.70. DeChant wasn’t far behind in fourth at 1:49.20.

Ike Sheppard (15th), Colby Childers (16th) and Mike Harland (18th) all finished in the top 20 for Battle Mountain. Jacob Bishop (22nd), JonPaul Ferzacca (23rd), David Shearon (26th) and Carl Lipp (29th) also did well.

Vail Christian was led by Ian Hamina in 21st place with a combined time of 2:00.10. Mathew Myers was 28th for the Saints.

In the girls’ race, Eva Spaeh was fast in both of her runs to take ninth. Spaeh finished with a combined time of 1:48.50. Kathleen Moore claimed 26th for the Gore Rangers.

The Battle Mountain girls alpine team showed its depth with six athletes in the top 20. Annie Talbot led the Huskies in 13th with a time of 1:55.60. Jana Weiss (14th), Isabelle Courtois (15th), Trisha Bruen (16th) and Rebecca Hughes (17th) were right behind Talbot.

Piper McMillin (20th) rounded out the Huskies in the top 20 with a combined time of 1:59.23.

McKenzie Curran (43rd), Kira Geddes (51st) and Allison Vossler (55th) were the top Vail Christian finishers.
