Local spikers finish sixth at state
The eighth-graders had won the district championships in the fall and coach Aimee Hatfield conducted tryouts for the state team.
Four of the girls, Britney Brown, Sophia Lindroth, Allie O’Conner and Crystin Rodrick had played in the state tournament last year as seventh-graders, and their experience proved helpful at this year’s competition.
Some of the best middle-school teams from around the state competed. Berry Creek went 13-3 on Saturday in pool play. In Pool 1, the team defeated Orchard Mesa, Summit, Sangre and Highlands Midddle Schools.
In the next round. the eighth graders defeated Sterling, lost to Grand Mesa, split with Columbine and crushed Fruita. That performance qualified the girls for the Gold Bracket, double-elimination tournament. The team picked up wins of Irving, Redlands, Highlands and Grand Mesa to conclude a strong showing.
