Local spikers win
Just win, baby.
While we’re pretty sure no one in the Eagle County high school volleyball actually likes the Oakland Raiders, that team’s former owner’s old saying applied this weekend. Eagle Valley, Vail Christian and Vail Mountain went 5-0.
The Devils started things with a five-game win at Roaring Fork, wrecking Homecoming for the Rams. Eagle Valley also got a bit of revenge against Steamboat Springs on Saturday. In a weird quirk of the schedule, the Devils and Sailors met twice during the same week. The Sailors won in Steamboat Tuesday. Eagle Valley returned the favor Saturday in Gypsum by a count of 19-25, 22-25, 25-21, 25-16, 15-11.
Eagle Valley is 5-3 overall and 4-2 in the 4A Slope. The Devils host Palisade on Tuesday at 6:30.
Vail Mountain is entering a key stretch of league game in the next week or so, and the Gore Rangers started it with a 28-26, 25-17, 25-17 win at Hotchkiss on Saturday. VMS has league games Tuesday (at Paonia), Thursday (home for Soroco) and Friday (home for Rangely)

“A good week could put us over .500 for the season,” VMS coach Mike Garvey said.
He’s really not joking, people. VMS is 3-4 overall and 2-1 in the 2A Slope. What’s also nice for the Gore Rangers is that they finally get to play matches on a regular basis after a slow start to the schedule.
Vail Christian was 2-for-2 on its journeys this weekend. The Saints swept North Park, 25-23, 26-24, 25-20, up in Walden on Friday night and then went out to Colbran and took care of Plateau Valley, 25-13, 25-14, 25-21, on Saturday. That’s 10-3 and 4-1 for Vail Christian.
The Saints are at Soroco on Tuesday.
