EDWARDS — Battle Mountain is yet again looking for a new football coach.

Huskies coach Cliff Lohrey, after a two-year stint, resigned recently to pursue other coaching opportunities.

“I thought from a professional standpoint, it was important to give Battle Mountain a chance to bring in a new coach,” Lohrey said. “It’s been a positive experience. I wish I could have done more.”

Lohrey’s Huskies went 7-12 in two seasons. For anyone attempting to read between the lines, this was Lohrey’s decision alone.

“I think Cliff did a good job,” Huskies athletic director Christopher Bailey said. “It’s hard when you have this many injuries, but Cliff kept on finding a way to win.”

Lohrey is Battle Mountain’s ninth coach during the last 20 seasons, a list that includes Scott Wiedeman, Duane Butcher, Fred Koetteritz, Pat Engle, Jason Sedlak, David Joyce, Steve Greve and Kevin Meyer. Lack of stability at the top is one of the major factors in the program’s struggles. Only Wiedeman, Engle and Joyce have coached the team for four years. Battle Mountain’s only winning season and playoff appearance since 1994 came in 2011 (9-2) under Joyce.

With a lack of success during this period, Battle Mountain football has struggled to attract numbers, and said lack of players becomes a self-fulfilling cycle as the Huskies continue to be on the wrong end of the stick on the gridiron.

The job opening has been posted on chsaanow.com, and Bailey said that he has already received applications. He said that he would like to start setting up interviews at the beginning of next month.

In other coaching news, Jason Fitzgerald is taking over as head coach of girls lacrosse, replacing Emily Jaissle. Fitzgerald, in addition to being the school’s volleyball coach, has served as an assistant to Jaissle the last few years.
