McCartney backs CU coach Hawkins

Bill McCartney, Colorado’s winningest football coach, threw his full support behind struggling Colorado coach Dan Hawkins today.

“I still believe he’s laid the right foundation,” McCartney said, “and with a foundation of sound character, hard work and principles, it’s just a matter of time.”

Hawkins is 13-26 in his fourth year. CU is 0-2, with upset losses to Colorado State and Toledo heading into a home game against Wyoming. McCartney, who retired after the 1994 season, said in a phone interview he likes the type of character and work ethic Hawkins is recruiting.

“In construction there’s a principle,” McCartney said. “The higher the building, the deeper you dig the foundation. What’s the foundation look like? He’s getting good kids who stay the course. It will end up being something significant.

“This isn’t a faulty foundation. They may have issues, but they have character, overall discipline and hard work in the off season. This offensive line is going to be good. They’ll go the distance. Next thing you know they’ll be running the football, making play-action passes, they’ll be able to rush the passer. It’s going to happen.”
