National championship qualifier comes to Silverthorne

SILVERTHORNE – The Swift Skedaddle Snowshoe Race provides an opportunity to experience snowshoeing at its best. This snowshoeing event takes place on Saturday at the Raven Golf Club in Silverthorne. For the competitive athlete, the 10K race will add excitement and competition to his or her winter schedule. This race will be a qualifying race for the Snowshoe National Championships. Several athletes will qualify to race against the nation’s best in Bolton Valley, Vt., on March 24. For those less competitive, but who enjoy the outdoors and want to stay fit, the 4K fun run/walk provides an introduction to snowshoeing.The event kicks off at 10 a.m. – registration is 8:30-9:45 a.m.) Racers will follow a single-track course (with a parallel singletrack for passing) in deep snow through the forest, up and down hills, over and through various obstacles to finish at the Raven Golf Club in time for a cup of soup and hot cocoa. In the 4K fun run and walk, participants can stroll along at a leisurely pace along the marked trail enjoying the beauty of the outdoors.At 11:30 am, the 100-meter snow dash will begin. This is a free event. Competitors will line up horizontally. When the gun sounds, racers will run straight ahead through the deep powder to come to an anaerobic halt 100 meters later.A limited number of free demo snowshoes (Tubbs) will be available (call ahead to reserve a pair.) The entry fee is $20 ($25 race day) and includes a T-shirt and goodie bag. Kids 14 and under are encouraged to attend and try the 4K or 200 meter snow-dash. The entry fee for kids is half price ($10) and there will be awards for all the kids.There will also be a raffle with several great prize-giveaways and awards for the overall and age group winners.To get to the start, from I-70 East, take the Silverthorne/Dillon exit (205). Travel north on Highway 9 approx. 3 miles through Silverthorne. Turn left on the second Golden Eagle Road (north). You will see the clubhouse just up the hill on the right.
