Olympic spikers coming to Vail Father’s Day weekend
This year’s King of the Mountain volleyball tournament in Vail during Father’s Day weekend (June 14-16) will have an Olympic flavor to it.
Three-time Olympic gold-medalist Kerri Walsh Jennings, along with 2004 beach volleyball Olympian Dax Holdren and a bevy of other AVP Pro Beach Tour all-stars, will be in attendance at the country’s largest beach doubles volleyball tournament.
Jennings, who, along with partner Misty May, created buzz and another gold medal at the London Olympics, will be coaching a free juniors volleyball clinic along with Holdren, her husband and pro beach player, Casey Jennings; former USA indoor national team member and 2009 Rookie of the Year on the AVP Pro Beach Tour, Angie Akers; and Ryan Mariano, AVP pro beach player and development trainer.
As well, Jennings and the AVP all-stars will be providing an “interactive exhibition” at the main championship sand courts during the tournament and will be on hand for autographs and photo opportunities right in Vail Village.
June 14 is the junior beach clinic from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Ford Park in Vail. That’ll be followed by a meet-and-greet at Solaris in Vail Village from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

On June 15, the Olympians and pros will put on an exhibition from 3 to 4:30 p.m. at the Vail Athletic Field, followed by more meeting-and-greeting at Solaris.
The annual Vail King of the Mountain Open is celebrating its 41st year as one of Vail’s oldest community events. The King of the Mountain has 26 different divisions of play including competition in juniors age groups, adults masters and seniors, men’s and women’s open and amateur divisions and special father-son and father-daughter divisions.
It attracts upward of 600 teams from all over the Rocky Mountain Area.
