Ortiz smashes school record in 1,600

GRAND JUNCTION – First off, what is up with the weather?

Battle Mountain and Eagle Valley track and field really don’t know what to do when it’s warm and sunny out. Aren’t wind chills in the 20s much better for times and distances?

“Today was definitely the warmest meet we’ve had in two years,” Devils coach Jeff Shroll said after Saturday’s Mickey Dunn Invitational at Grand Junction. “It snowed at state last year.”

Somehow, the Devils and Huskies managed to forge onward, producing news from the west.

For Battle Mountain, the girls finished third in their first foray into the Western Slope. The only teams in front of the Huskies were Palmer Ridge and Glenwood Springs, not that anyone would be comparing on the latter.

And the Huskies will be eating cake in practice on Monday because Mandy Ortiz crushed the mile, running the 1,600 in 5 minutes, 20.42 seconds for a new school record.

“It’s no accident,” Huskies girls coach Rob Parish said. “She’s been working tirelessly, preparing for that event. She started working on that in June of last year.”

The old 1,600 mark was held by Arwyn Becker, and she broke the mark held by Sarah Schleper, who turned out to have pretty good World Cup skiing career.

Ladies jumping was also a theme for the local teams. Eagle Valley’s Michelle Carbajal won the triple jump, while Battle Mountain’s Logan Carlson was tops in the high jump.

“Today was a big help for us,” Shroll said. “There was a lot of good 5A competition, which really helped us perform. It gives us a good measuring stick of what we need to accomplish.”

Along those lines, Eagle Valley is at Cedaredge next week, while Battle Mountain is at Fort Collins.
