Pepi’s kicks off Vail Invitational with tie
All types of weather dribbled across the Vail Athletic Field on Friday during the approximate hour it took for Pepi’s (soccer club) game against El Muneco Pumas.
The tie ball game, 1-1, marked the first scores in the books for the 33rd Annual Vail Invitational Soccer Tournament.
“We were definitely looking for the win here – home field, first game. But, being down 1-0, coming back and salvaging the tie is big,” said Pepi’s Daryl Goehring.
The first half saw no goals, as many opportunities slipped away.
Five minutes into the second half, El Muneco Pumas’ Francisco Flores cranked a brilliant shot from 22 yards out, which dipped well out of Pepi’s goalie Kyle Mercer’s reach.
The teams battled back and forth, and Pepi’s moved Goehring up from stopper to the front line to try and bolster offense and muster a goal. With five minutes remaining in the match, the strategy became successful when Pepi’s center midfielder Miguel Ruiz struck a low shot into the El Muneco Pumas goalie’s left side of the net from 20 yards out.
The round-robin preliminaries for the Vail Invitational Soccer Tournament continue today. Pepi’s starts things off with a game at 8 a.m. against Greeley at the Vail Athletic Field, and Pepi’s faces Brighton at 1:15 p.m. at the Vail Athletic Field.
