Plenty of snowshoeing on tap for Saturday

BEAVER CREEK – The Beaver Creek Snowshoe Adventure Series comes to a close Saturday with the Jeremy Wright North American Snowshoe Championships. Open to snowshoe enthusiasts of all ages and abilities, the Championships offers a “Dash For Cash,” a 50-yard sprint, the East-West 5K Quest, a recreational walk and run, a competitive 10K race for adults, and a Kids K for children ages 5-12. Races begin at 11 a.m. in Beaver Creek’s McCoy Park on Saturday. The event has been newly dedicated to Wright, 31, a former Vail resident who died while on duty in Afghanistan in January. Wright was a communications sergeant and a Green Beret in the Army’s Special Forces. He was a former member of the U.S. Trail Running Team and was a top finisher in the Beaver Creek Snowshoe Adventure Series. Registration is open at Ptarmigan Sports in Edwards or online at http://www.bcsnowshoe.com. Pre-registration price for an individual race is $20 per person per race. Day-of registration is available on race day only from 9-10:45 a.m. in McCoy Park for $25 per person per race. All participants must check-in on race day to receive a bib. Atlas Snow-Shoe Company will provide complimentary snowshoe demos and Nike ACG will offer demo Teocalli shoes for participants. All demos are available on a first come, first-served basis.Following the Kids K, Beaver Creek Children’s Theater will provide free entertainment in the Vilar Center while parents participate in the event. Following the races, a post-event party will take place on Beaver Creek Plaza with free food and beverages and prizes for participants. Snowshoers can park for free in the Bear Lot along Highway 6 in Avon. A complimentary shuttle will then transport snowshoers to the Lower Beaver Creek Mountain Express Lift (#15) at Beaver Creek Landing or the Strawberry Park Express Lift (#12) in Beaver Creek Village. Participants can ride either lift to reach event registration in McCoy Park. Event representatives will distribute pedestrian lift passes to participants without lift passes.The Beaver Creek Snowshoe Adventure Series will donate a portion of proceeds from the series to the Vail Breast Cancer Awareness Group on Saturday. Vail Mountain 5-milerVAIL – The Billy’s Island Grill Vail Mountain 5-Miler, the final race in The Nike/ACG-Pedal Power Nordic Adventure Series, will take place Saturday at 7 p.m.. Pre-race registration begins at Billy’s Island Grill in Lionshead at 5 p.m..This evening race gives competitors the opportunity to test their strength and endurance on one of the biggest ski hills in North America. All racers will need a lightsource to “see” their way to the finish line of this exciting course.An end-of-series awards party will take place immediately after the race at Billy’s Island Grill. Awards will be given to the top -five finishers in both the men’s and women’s categories for both this race and the overall series.This year’s Vail Mountain race will take place on a 5-mile cross country-style course covering lower Vail Mountain with challenging climbs and descents over ski terrain as well as long stretches of untracked single track through the woods. All proceeds from the Nordic Adventure Series will benefit local Eagle County charities. Registration for the event is $20 ($25 on race day).
