AVON, Colorado ” In appreciation of the roots of ice hockey and in celebration of the love of the game, the 2008 Rocky Mountain Pond Hockey Championship will be held at Nottingham Lake in Avon from Jan. 12 to 13 for the youth division and Jan. 18 to 20 for the adult division.

Each weekend players will enjoy on-site food and beverage and a log fire.

The adult weekend will kick off at Dobson Arena in Vail Jan. 18 with the Detroit Red Wing Alumni taking on the Vail Mountaineer Alumni. A special silent auction will take place after the game where selected NHL Alumni players will be available to play on any team that bids for their services (in Saturday’s games).

The Rocky Mountain Pond Hockey Championship will have a maximum line up of 48 teams each weekend spread over 12 different age divisions. Divisions for the youth weekend include Mite youth hockey players (7 to 8 years old) all the way through midgets (15 to 17). The Adult weekend hosts a Senior Open division, over 40 division, over 50 division, and a women’s division. Proceeds from the event go to the Vail Eagle Hockey Association and the Herb Brooks Foundation.

“We are really excited about this year’s event,” said Andy Clark, event organizer. “Most hockey players remember lacing up their skates at a local pond as a kid. It’s where young hockey player’s dreams are made and old players play like they

are young.”

“This is an opportunity for hockey lovers, young and old, beginners and advanced players to share one of the greatest joys of ice hockey. Playing on the pond with friends. It is also a chance to give back to the game, as all proceeds from this event are donated to Vail-Eagle Hockey Association”.

Registration is limited and teams are encouraged to do so in advance of the Jan. 11 deadline. Registration is $250 per team for the youth weekend and $500 per team for the adult weekend. All teams must consist of a minimum of six players.
