Pond skimming coming in April
VAIL – Skimmers from all parts of the globe are gathering floaties and flippers and making the annual migration to the Vail Valley. Many will compete for fame and glory, while others have their eye on the grand prize, “The Golden Skimmer.”They are the unsinkable athletes that will showcase their water solubility on Lake Golden Peak on April 15, from 2-5 p.m. at the World Pond Skimming Championships, a showing that defies the laws of physics and perhaps even common sense. Highlighting the Spring Back to Vail festivities, the World Pond Skimming Championships is open to anyone and everyone who believes they can walk on water. It is guaranteed to be a wet and wild good time.”The participating athletes typically represent a wide sea of talent, including water skiers, ice fishermen, costume designers and pool cleaners,” said Amy Hornyak of Vail-based Highline Sports and Entertainment, the organizers of the World Pond Skimming Championships. “These globetrotting watermen and women have practiced in many a pond leading up to the Worlds. I suspect we will see a combo of competition and comedy at the event. It’s going to be a blow-out party to welcome spring.”Pond Skimming involves generating as much speed as possible down an in-run of snow on skis or snowboard, then skimming across a 100 feet pond of freezing cold water. A select panel of celebrity judges will score each competitor on distance, style and overall creativity. Registration for the World Pond Skimming Championships is now open online at http://www.springbacktovail.com and is limited to the first 75 applicants. The 2006 World Pond Skimming Championships are part of Spring Back to Vail, April 3-16, two raucous weekends of music, parties and on-snow events. For additional information on Spring Back to Vail, call (970) 476-6797.
