Postscript spike: Three to play in All-State game
Vail, CO Colorado
EAGLE COUNTY ” At this point, it’s anything but an anomaly when volleyball players from Eagle County grab statewide attention.
Sunday, three local volleyball players will be taking part in the All-state matches.
“It seems normal for our teams to do it,” said Vail Christian’s Kristin McGinty, who, along with Kelly Bowles, will represent the Saints in the 1A game.
Leading one of two 1A teams will be Vail Christian coach Cathy Alexander, who navigated her team to back-to-back state appearances.
“It’s an honor to be able to coach, because typically it’s a (coach from) an Eastern Plains team,” Alexander said. “They came up last year and asked me and I said yes. I’d been there with several of my players before.”
Battle Mountain’s Devon Abbott will be playing in the 4A game, while teammate Alexa Corcoran was selected but won’t be able to attend.
“It should be exciting to play with a bunch of girls we played against,” Abbott said. “I have a lot of friends who play 5A and I’ll get to see them this weekend, too.”
Last year, the Huskies sent four player along with coach Brian Doyon to the All-state game.
“It’s pretty neat,” Doyon said of fielding a full squad of players in two years. “It’s more of a representation of how good the kids are.”
While most kids probably don’t want to extend a season that started in August any further, the All-state selections don’t mind one bit.
“It’s flattering,” Abbott said of the selection.
The teams will practice Saturday, although the Saints aren’t waiting until then.
“We went to the recreation center the other day,” McGinty said. “And we’re going again Friday.”
After practice on Saturday, there will be a banquet introducing all the players.
