Vail Christian used a dominant run game and stifling defense to defeat Soroco 42-8 on Friday and improve to 3-2 on the year. Asher Morris led the way with 68 yards and a score while Colt Burkley ran into the end zone twice to guide the Saints to their second-straight victory.
“It was a big defensive day,” said head coach Tim Pierson, whose team compiled 175 yards as a group on the ground, forced six turnovers and had a pair of key stops on fourth-and-1. While it ended well, Pierson’s squad didn’t get off to the best start.
On the game’s first offensive play, Morris tossed an interception. But the defense came up with a turnover of its own on the ensuing Soroco drive, with Sid Towle causing a fumble, which was recovered by Hayden Sample. The momentum-shifting play led to a 12-yard touchdown run from Burkley.

Sawyer Willis was all over the field on both sides of the ball for the Saints. The senior scored on a 10-yard run, had an interception and forced a fumble. Morris also caused a fumble and Finn Hooper and Elijah Beckett accounted for a pair of picks. Vail Christian jumped out to a 22-0 first-quarter lead and never looked back, putting up the game’s first 42 points before Soroco finally got on the board on the game’s last play.
Vail Christian heads to Mancos on Oct. 11. The Bluejays are 4-1 on the year.
