EDWARDS – These ladies are tough, fast and talented, and they’ve come to Vail to showcase lacrosse.

The Women’s Elite Vail/Avon Lacrosse Shootout began Thursday at various athletic fields around the valley.

At Chip Ramsey Field in Edwards, Pool B, the second of three pools, duked it out.

Most notably, Team AXIA, formerly womenslacrosse.com and Chesapeake, trounced Team Ohio 19-0.

Team AXIA, the second-seeded team in the tournament, carries a long, successful history in the Vail/Avon Lacrosse Shootout, having won the championship game seven out of the last nine years.

The team is led by some of the best players in the country, including Randall Goldsborough-Flynn, a member of the United States Women’s Elite Lacrosse Team and the head coach at Bucknell University.

“I started playing lacrosse in gym class in elementary school,” said Goldsborough-Flynn, who scored four goals in the game. “But, I was a basketball player growing up. I expected to get a scholarship for college basketball. Then, senior year in high school, I played in a tournament in Maryland, and ended up playing lacrosse there (at the University of Maryland).”

Jaque Weitzel scored three goals and Crista Samaras led all scorers with five in Team AXIA’s shutout of Team Ohio.

“This is a fun tournament,” said Goldsborough-Flynn. “It’s not really about showing off. It’s about building team unity and friendship. And we love to come out to Colorado, or areas that may not be as exposed to lacrosse, and showcase the sport to youth, high-school programs and try to grow the game.”

The Women’s Elite Vail/Avon Lacrosse Shootout continues today through Sunday at Chip Ramsey Field and Vail Athletic Field. Games start at 9 a.m. and end at approximately 3:00 p.m. at both venues.
