Red Wings host Saturday clinic
EAGLE – If one of the top hockey coaches in the world comes to town, local coaches should probably take notice. On Saturday, the Eagle Valley Skating Association is sponsoring a coaches clinic, hosted by former Red Wings coach, Barry Smith. Smith has coached at every level all over the world. On a recent trip to Europe, he learned some new techniques that he is eager to share.”What they were doing (in Europe) is read-and-react type drills,” said Smith. “Sometimes, the North American drills look good while you are doing them, but don’t carry over into the game. These do.”With the read-and-react drills, Smith puts players in situations that closely resemble a game. The player is not told what to do; rather, they must react according to what is happening in front of them.”We are trying to put kids in the right positions and provide them with the coaching they need to make the right decisions,” said Smith, who made stops in hockey-hotbeds Russia, Finland, and Sweden this year.As part of his commitment to coaching, board member Andy Clark and EVSA are offering to cover the costs of the clinic for coaches in Eagle County. The clinic is open to coaches outside the county for $50 per coach.”You are only as good as your coaches,” says Clark. “We want to make the sport of hockey valley-wide here. I don’t care if you have experience or you are a first-time coach. This will make you better.”Joining Smith at the camp are Red Wing goalie coach Jim Bedard, and “Miracle on Ice” gold medalist, John Harrington. There is no better coaching clinic available anywhere in this part of the country, according to Clark. The clinic goes from 9 a.m.-2 p.m., and will provide coaches with plenty of interaction with top-level guests Harrington, Smith, and Bedard.Call the Eagle Pool and Ice Rink at 328-5277 to register.Vail, Colorado
