Rifle blanks Huskies booters 1-0

Rifle’s Katie Legg scored the only goal of the game from 40 yards out and the marker stood.

“The girls battled. They did a great job. The defense was so strong. It was so tough,” Huskies coach Kate Steffens said.

Steffens gave a lot of credit to the Huskies’ backline for keeping the Bears in check.

“Keegan Garnsey did a great job. She was marking (Rifle’s Haley Hubbell). She did the same thing last time out against Rifle – just mark the girl out of the game,” Steffens said. “On the other side, Brittany Peterson was tracking her girl. She did a great job. Cak Baskins was sweeping. She always brings the level of the competition up and demands so much of her teammates. Lauryn Arnold was also out there stopping and doing a good job.”

The Huskies are 2-7 in league and 2-9 overall. They will wrap the season Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Eagle-Vail against Palisade in a game with postseason implications. The visiting Bulldogs need a win to lock up a playoff berth. If the Huskies can pull the upset, Rifle will get the nod.

But a bigger motive for the Huskies would be to end the season on a high note and send their seniors out with a win.

“We were so close today,” Steffens said. “We had some chances and I knew that we could do it. I think the same thing can happen against Palisade. Hopefully, we can get that spark.”
