Rockies reach late deal with their top pick

Associated Press

DENVER – The Colorado Rockies and their top draft pick, left-handed pitcher Tyler Matzek, agreed to a contract with a $3.9 million signing bonus just before Monday night’s 10 p.m. MDT deadline.

Matzek, from Capistrano Valley High School in Mission Viejo, Calif., was rated by Baseball America as the top left-handed pitcher in the draft in June and was taken with the 11th pick.

Matzek went 13-1 with a 0.97 ERA in 15 games for Capistrano Valley last spring, when opponents hit just .144 off him. He also went 3-0 with a 0.00 ERA in three starts during the state playoffs in leading Capistrano Valley to the title.

The Rockies have selected a pitcher with their first pick four straight year.
