DENVER, Colorado –The Rockies’ bullpen, so good on the field of late, got rocked off the field today.

Setup man Manuel Corpas reported to work today with a slightly sore and slightly swollen right elbow. He was examined this afternoon and underwent an MRI. The MRI results aren’t yet known.

“Manny showed up today with some inflammation in his right elbow,” manager Jim Tracy said.

The Rockies didn’t see this coming, particularly after Corpas threw a scoreless eighth inning in his past two appearances.

“It stunned him and it stunned us,” Tracy said. “As a matter of fact, he threw the ball even better (Thursday)than he did on Wednesday. And he threw a minimal number of pitches. We are obviously going to be proactive on this and we want to find out what the heck is going on with this – immediately.”

A source close to Corpas said the reliever didn’t think the injury was a big deal.

“He said it was just a little inflammation, but the training staff said they wanted to take a close look at it,” the source said. “I guess it’s better to be safe than sorry. Manny doesn’t think it’s that big a deal.”

Tracy isn’t sure who will set up closer Huston Street tonight against the Pirates. He could use right-hander Matt Daley or lefty Alan Embree.

“A lot of that will depend on the situation, especially in the case of tonight’s game,” Tracy said.

The Rockies lost setup man Taylor Buchholz during spring training with an elbow injury. He underwent Tommy John surgery on Wednesday.
