Rockies top ’07 Colorado sports stories

DENVER ” The Colorado Rockies’ most successful season ever and a senseless slaying that left two children without a father and jolted a franchise and a community topped voting by Colorado Associated Press member newspaper and broadcast editors for the state’s Top 10 sports stories of 2007.

The Rockies’ run to their first World Series also won balloting for the year’s top Colorado general news story.

Denver Broncos’ cornerback Darrent Williams’ killing stunned the team, the community and the nation. There have been no arrests in the slaying, which is believed to be gang-related.



The Top 10, chosen during balloting Dec. 9-20:

1 ” Colorado Rockies’ remarkable run to reach their first World Series.

2 ” Denver Broncos cornerback Darrent Williams is killed after leaving a Denver nightclub early New Year’s Day, his limousine sprayed with bullets in a drive-by shooting.

3 ” Sonny Lubick is fired after 15 seasons at Colorado State after his fourth straight losing season and a skid of 13 games spanning 2006-07.

4 ” Former Northern Colorado backup punter Mitch Cozad gets seven years in prison for stabbing starter Rafael Mendoza.

5 ” Rockies rookie shortstop Troy Tulowitzki has a monster year that includes an unassisted triple play. He finishes second to Ryan Braun of Milwaukee in Rookie of the Year balloting.

6 ” Running back Travis Henry joins the Broncos as a free agent but is dogged by injuries and a looming suspension until he wins his case against the NFL over a failed drug test.

7 (tie) ” Rockies minor league coach Mike Coolbaugh is killed by a line drive, prompting Major League Baseball to require all base coaches to wear helmets starting in 2008.

7 (tie) ” Colorado goes without a PGA Tour stop after The International is canceled.

9 ” Colorado Avalanche miss playoffs for first time since moving from Quebec in the 1990s despite a late-season push propelled by young prospects.

10 ” Denver Broncos have a horrible season despite high expectations for a franchise whose last sub-.500 season was 1999, the year after John Elway retired.
