Royals’ Gordon to have surgery in Vail

KANSAS CITY, Mo. ” The Kansas City Royals have placed third baseman Alex Gordon on the 15-day disabled list with a cartilage tear in his right hip.

The Royals said Thursday that Gordon will undergo surgery in Vail, Colo., on Friday to have the tear repaired. His return is uncertain.

Gordon grew up in Lincoln and starred at the University of Nebraska.

To fill his position on the roster, the team said it was recalling outfielder Mitch Maier from triple-A Omaha. The 26-year-old Maier has hit .370 with two home runs and nine RBIs through six games with the minor league team.

Maier’s first game will be Friday night when the Royals play the Texas Rangers in Arlington, Texas.
