Saints fall at states

DENVER – Opposing teams didn’t exactly lay out the welcome mat for Vail Christian at the 1A state tournament Friday.

No. 3 Simla took care of the Saints, 25-19, 25-18, 25-21, and then defending state champion Fleming swept Vail Christian, 25-17, 25-22, 25-15. With the two losses, the Saints were eliminated from state-title contention.

That said, there are 300-plus high school volleyball teams in Colorado from 1A to 5A, and only 40 get to finish their season on the floor of the Denver Coliseum. There are 72 Class 1A squads, and Vail Christian was one of the last eight standing.

“The girls played exceptionally well,” Saints coach Cathy Alexander said. “The trio of seniors played well. Krissy (Kristen Currey) stepped up. It wasn’t like we didn’t belong there. We held on at 15, 16, 17 and 18 points and then the other team’s experience rolled through.”

Vail Christian closes out the state tourney with Springfield today in what will be a final huzzah for both teams.

“I think we match up well,” Alexander said. “I watched them in between our games. It’s one of those things where you go out and play for pride. I just couldn’t be more proud of how our girls are playing.”
