Saints Homecoming spotlight – Brittany Wright

At 5-foot-3, Vail Christian outside-hitter Brittany Wright still stands tall as Saints volleyball continues to make waves in 2003. Hey, she even got her first block last weekend. (Details below.). Quite frankly, we’re amazed that she has the time to play volleyball, given her heavy five-AP course load. For more on Wright, read on:

Date of birth: July 4, 1986 – “I used to think the fireworks were for me. My sister (Courtney) said it was her birthday present to me. I’ve learned that they’re not.”

Parents: Geoff and Nancy

Siblings: Courtney, 20, Battle Mountain alumna

Class: Senior

Position: Outside hitter

What’s fun about volleyball?: “Besides just the sport, it’s the team and hanging out with the other girls, the social aspect. And, then, there’s the competition aspect as well.”

Do you like rally-point scoring?: “Yes, it makes every point count, which is a lot better. If you work hard for the point, you want the point, even if you didn’t serve. You feel you deserve it. And it puts emphasis on the serve.”

Do you feel jitters in a 24-23 game, serving now?: “Oh, yeah. You definitely can’t miss the serve. If you do, there’s a point.”

How do you work with your setter to get that perfect ball?: “Lauren Mutter and Nicole Parker definitely have to get to know us. I’m shorter, so I have to be off the net more. They’re just really good at working with us and getting the ball where we need it. They’re just very accurate.”

What the perfect kill like?: “All that work finally pays off. All those extra practices finally pay off. It feels really good. Of course, it’s because of your setter, and it goes back to the person who passed it.”

How excited are you for Homecoming?: “I’m excited, but it’s sad. I’m definitely excited for the game, but it’s also sad because it’s my last Homecoming in high school.”

Best moment on the court: “Definitely hitting. I’m starting to hit this year and I never really tried before because I’m much shorter. Usually, I’ll pass and then come out when we rotate to the front row. But, now, I blocked my first ball (against Ridgway). I have to jump six inches higher than anybody else. I yelled, “Touch,’ for the first time ever.”

Most embarrassing moment: “I never understood how people would get hit in the face with the ball. I didn’t understand why they couldn’t move their arms. I finally got hit in the face with the ball (against Ouray) because I wasn’t moving and I wasn’t low enough. I wasn’t looking and I got hit in the head.”

What’s coach Cathy Alexander like?: “She is an amazing coach. She definitely brings us together. She’s more than a coach. She coaches us on ethics and teamwork and what it’s like to be a team, instead of just volleyball. I’ve learned much more from her than just the game of volleyball.”

Funniest teammate: Lauren Mutter – “She can always make us laugh.”

Favorite subject: English, taking two classes, a college course and AP English

College plans: Applying to Boston College, DU, TCU, UCLA and Southern Cal.

Career plans: “Since I was 6 years old, I wanted to be a lawyer. I guess, I always argued with my parents, which is pretty typical. But, I was very good at my arguments and I would usually win them. I enjoy law and government and how it all works.”
